APA Referencing Examples: Reports

General information for items retrieved online in a PDF format

If a report is retrieved online as a PDF but is only available once it has been downloaded to your computer, provide a working URL (a URL that links to the relevant webpage and not your C drive). To do this, right click on the download link and choose the "copy link address" option. If this doesn't provide a working URL, use the URL of the page the report was downloaded from. 

Reports by individual or group author

Format

Author, A. (Year). Title in italic sentence case (Report series name and number if provided). Publisher/Website in Title Case. URL

Notes

  • Authors of reports may be group/s or individual/s or group and individual authors combined.
  • If the names of individuals are presented on the title page or cover, treat the work as having individual authors.
  • If only the name of the group is presented on the title page or cover, treat the work as having a group author, even if individuals are credited elsewhere in the work (e.g. in an acknowledgments section).
  • If there is a Report series name and/or number, it can be added after the title in brackets.
  • When the publisher is the same as the author, omit the publisher statement.

Notes

  • Refer to the Standard by its number in-text e.g.:  As specified by NZS 1170.5:2004 (Standards New Zealand, 2016, p. 55)
  • If refering to more than one Standard published in the same year use the format for "same author, same year" in the APA Reference Formatting Guide, by adding lower case letters (a, b, c, etc) immediately after the year. 
  • When the publisher is the same as the author, omit the publisher statement.

Repository reports and publications (not theses)

Format

Author, A. (Date). Title of the item in italic sentence case (Publication No. if it has one). Name of the Repository or Archive. URL (usually in the form of a permanent link)

Notes

  • Professional standards or codes of practice/ethics are referenced in the same way as a website/PDF.
  • When the author and publisher are the same, omit the publisher name, but add the URL if accessed online.
  • To cite a specific section of an ethics code, indicate the specific section in the in-text citation. Use the terms in the code to refer to sections, e.g. sections, provisions, or standards.
