  • Look at the Author Element section of the APA Formatting Guide to see how to reference multiple authors and some other variations.
  • Do not include URLs or database information from academic research databases like Ebook Central.
  • Full Date is used for weekly magazines; Month and Year for monthly magazines.
  • The magazine Title and Volume number are italicised, followed by the Issue number in parentheses (not italicised). Please see the Title section in the Formatting Guide for further information.
  • When information (e.g. Volume number, Issue number, page range) is missing, omit it from the reference.
  • To cite a quote from a source that does not use page numbers, please see the Quotations section in the APA Formatting Guide for further information.
  • Include the URL if the article source was online. However, if an online source has both a DOI number and a URL, only include the DOI.

Notes

  • If there is no author, the article title in sentence case comes first.
  • If there is no author, in the in-text citation, shorten long titles, use double quotation marks around the title and Title Case.
  • If you used a print version of the newspaper article, provide the page or pages of the article after the newspaper title. Do not include the abbreviations “p.” or “pp.” before the page(s).
  • For your in-text citation, include p. or pp. before the page number. 
  • Newspaper titles use Title Case (i.e. a capital letter is used for key words). The newspaper title is italicised.
  • If page numbers are discontinuous, separate page numbers with a comma. e.g. pp. A1, A4-5.
  • To cite a quote from a source that does not use page numbers, please see the Quotations section in the APA Formatting Guide for further information.
  • If you found the article on a newspaper’s website, provide the URL.
  • If the article is from a news website (e.g., Stuff, CNN, BBC News), one that does not have an associated daily or weekly newspaper, use the format for a Webpage on a news website instead.

  • Use this example if the article is from a news website (e.g., Stuff, CNN, BBC News) — one that does not have an associated daily or weekly newspaper.
  • If there are no authors and you're citing an entire work, place the webpage title in italicised sentence case in the author's position, please see the No author section in the APA Formatting Guide for further information.  
  • If the title of the webpage is italicised in the full reference, also italicise the title in the in-text citation.
  • If the title is long, shorten it for the in-text citation.
  • When the author and the website are the same, omit the website from the reference.
  • Provide the most specific date possible (e.g. 2020, May 2). Use no date (n.d.) if no date of publication is given.
  • Only the year is needed for the in-text citation.
  • To cite a quote from a source that does not use page numbers, please see the Quotations section in the APA Formatting Guide for further information.

  • If a newsletter appears seasonally, include the year and the season as part of the publication date information in the Reference List e.g. (2018, Spring).
