Extra Tips for Indigenous Research & Researchers: Rauru Whakarere Evaluation Framework

Rauru Whakarere Evaluation Framework

The Rauru Whakarere Evaluation Framework provides a kaupapa Māori-informed approach to evaluation that encourages deep critique and engagement with the information surrounding us.

The Rauru Whakarere pattern visually represents interconnectedness, illustrating that information evaluation is not a linear process. To determine which information can be trusted, multiple strategies must be woven together.

This framework integrates Māori concepts that promote a richer understanding of the evaluation process than can be captured by English terms alone. The Māori concepts are imbued with spirituality and metaphor, elements often lost in purely literal translations. The framework embodies the interconnectedness of Whakapapa (background), Orokohanga (origins), Mana (authority), Māramatanga (content), and Aronga (lens), which together form a comprehensive basis for evaluating the information we use.
