Referencing: Referencing Style Guides

This guide provides links to our various referencing style guides, outlines why we reference, and also provides information on copyright and reference management software.

Why do we reference?

  • To show that relevant sources have been investigated and that you have researched your topic.
  • To enable the person reading our work to trace the original sources we have used.
  • To provide evidence to support your argument.
  • To give differing points of view.
  • To indicate that we have not used someone else's ideas and claimed them as our own, i.e. to avoid plagiarism.
You must acknowledge (reference or cite) any work, idea, image etc. that you quote, paraphrase, summarise or quote, or copy.
