Help with formatting Microsoft Word Documents

Formatting your assignments

When formatting your assignments you need to follow the guidelines set out by your lecturers in the course outline.  However, if there are no guidelines set, here are some basic considerations that are generally followed across the different papers:

  • Font: Use an easy-to-read font such as Calibri or Times New Roman
  • Font size: Not too big, nor too small; 11pt or 12pt is the norm for body text.  You might go a size or two bigger for headings.
  • Line spacing: Use 1.5 or 2.0

To insert page numbers, go up to the top ribbon where it says "Insert", select "Page Number" and choose the layout that suits you.  Here is a short video demonstrating how to do it:

The Moodle Page, Library Research Workshops, covers information on using EndNote, Word, Copyright and getting started on your literature review.

The links below provide some information on using Microsoft Word.

(Please note that these documents are currently being reviewed and updated so are due to change in the future).
